Taranto (Tarentum)

Taranto (Tarentum)
Port-city in southern Italy (q.v.) on the coast of the Ionian Sea (q.v.). In 663 Constans II (q.v.) used it as a base to campaign against the Lombards (q.v.). By the end of the seventh century, it had fallen to the Lombard duke of Benevento (q.v.). It was lost to the Arabs (q.v.) during the reign of Theophilos (q.v.), who pressured Venice (q.v.) to send a fleet to recover it in 840. This attempt failed, and only in 880 was it recovered by Basil I (q.v.). In the 11th century it fell to the Normans under Robert Guiscard (qq.v.).
